Catawba Indians pay Respects to Elders

Add to My Yahoo!
Just got in from the pow-wow at the Catawba Indian Reservation. I thought it was a nice ceremony paying respects to the elders. There were only a few potters present. I think that was due to the very short notice. I really enjoyed the singing and dancing. Bob got a chance to meet Tom Blumer who surprised us all. We thought he had other plans. Below is a photo of Keith "Little Bear" Brown who was one of the dancers.

Catawba Indian Update 2

Add to My Yahoo!
It appears Tom Blumer will not attend the Catawba Indian Elders Pow-wow. He will be at the Lily Festival all day. The weather appears to be ok for the Pow-wow, it might be a little cloudy in the morning but overall it looks pretty good. Be sure to bring your camera. I hope everyone has a great time as we pay our respects to our elders.

Catawba Indian Nation Pow-Wow Update

Add to My Yahoo!
Not much news to report. I do know that I will be out of town and Warren Sanders and Cheryl (Morning Star) Sanders will be out of town also. Tom Blumer said he was going to try to make it. So if you have a copy of one of his books bring it along with you. Tom would be honored to sign it for you. Bring your camera as this will be a great opportunity to get some great photos.

I do not have contact with all the potters so it is not clear which Catawba potters will be setting up. I did see Earl Robbins yesterday and he is currently sold out of pottery. So I doubt if he will be there.

Add to My Yahoo!
Catawba Indian Powwow

The Catawba Indian Nation Senior Center at 996 Avenue of the Nations, will host a powwow, "Honor Our Elders Gathering" from 10am to 2pm on Saturday 21 May.
There will be drummers and dancers. This is a great opportunity to see the Catawba Indians in their regalia. Also a good time to see some of the traditional dances.
Catawba seniors will be selling arts, crafts and Catawba pottery. As I get more information I will post it here.
If you plan to stay and observe all the dances it is recommended you bring lawn chairs, umbrellas or canopies. The seniors will be selling Catawba stew and Indian tacos. So make your plans now.

Margaret Robbins has new pieces

Add to My Yahoo!
I went to Mr. Earl Robbins today. He was in a good mood and said he felt real good. As of right now he is not inspired to make any Native American pottery. If it is one thing I have learned, it is you can't rush these talented Indian potters.
I did get some more of Margarets pieces. She had a darling little American Indian pottery snake bowl. She also has a small Indian pottery bowl at a very reasonable price. You need to check it out.

I will be going to Earl and Viola Robbins home on Monday. I talked to Margaret last night and she has a few new pieces of Catawba Indian Pottery. She said she had a couple of small bowls at a very cheap price. So here is you chance to get a piece American Indian Pottery. I will also get a chance to visit with Earl and Viola which is always a pleasure and a honor.
