famed Arzada Sanders. He grew up watching her make pottery. When his
father, William Sanders, dug clay for Arzada, Donnie went along and helped to
dig. He took part in the entire long process as best a child could.
When he was old enough to build pottery, Arzada taught him how to make turtles.
He says, “Turtles was all she would let me make. Clay was like gold to

I have been using it since 1998 without one problem. The potters receive 90% of selling price. The 10% is to pay our Paypal fees, hosting fees and advertising costs. All Catawba Tribe Pottery on this page is made in the ancient traditional handcrafted method of their native forefathers. This last burn that Donnie did was very unique. None of the other potters have attempted this method in years. Back in the old days potters didn't have fancy ovens to pre-burn their pieces. Potters had to strictly use open fire pits to burn their pottery. If the weather was bad they would sometimes try to pre-burn their pottery in front of a open fireplace in the home. The way this burn is done is circle the pieces around the open pit and build a fire in the center. It takes many hours for the pottery heat up and the potter has to know when the time is right to move them into the fire. The potter has to keep the fire going for 20-24 hours sometimes more. On this burn which Donnie did on 4-8-06 he began with 19 pieces and only lost 3 in the burn. This is a extremely risky way to burn pottery. Donnie said it was a great learning experience for him and he plans to do it again. This makes the pieces from this "long burn" extremely rare.
