Here is Mr. Earl Robbins holding one of his massive Indian Pottery snake bowls. He is well known for his massive Indian Pottery pieces. This very quiet gentleman is the most renowned Catawba male potter of the 20th century. He learned his craft in the 1930's when all of the Indians were involved in the North Carolina Cherokee trade. Artistic by talent and inclination and very demanding of himself, Earl Robbins learned the difficult art of making Indian Pottery pipe molds as a teenager. Like most of the Catawba potters of the 1960s, he stopped making Indian Pottery as jobs in the public sector became available and the North Carolina mountain trade failed. From that point on he worked as a carpenter. He resumed working in clay in 1987, and his art quickly came in great demand among collectors such as private citizens and museums throughout the Carolinas. During the period, he resumed making Indian Pottery pipe molds and taught numerous young Catawba Indian potters this exacting skill. Earl Robbins is basically a traditional Catawba potter, but he will innovate when the urge suits him. He resurrected the Indian Pottery horse pot, the Indian Pottery turtle pipe and made new shapes such as the Indian Pottery crazy horse pot. His Indian Pottery snake pots are monumental and resemble great sculpture, yet they are Catawba in character. All of Earl Robbins work made since 1987 is signed and dated.
