Catawba Indian Potter: KEITH "Little Bear" BROWN
Since the Settlement of 1993 and the founding of the Catawba Cultural Center, Keith Brown has become important to many things key to Catawba Culture. He learned Catawba Indian pottery making early in life by watching his grandmother Edith Harris Brown work in clay. As she advanced in age, Keith helped her burn her wares in an open fire. To improve his skills, he became a student in the Catawba Indian Pottery Class of 1976. He has made Catawba Indian pottery independently since that time. He joined the staff of the Catawba Cultural Center in 1995 and was appointed Exhibits Coordinator. Some of the exhibits he organized were on Catawba military veterans and the People of the River. He obtained a grant to fund a major exhibit on the re-emergence of male potters among the Catawba. He was instrumental in the return of the Sweat Lodge to the Catawba Nation and remains a crucial part of this ancient tradition by constructing lodges and holding ceremonies on the full moon. He markets his Catawba Indian ware to collectors and is a regular Catawba Indian pottery demonstrator at festivals throughout the Carolinas. In 1997 he was a participant in the first class conducted by the South Carolina Institute of Community Scholars in the Traditional Arts.
