Until the design of this website, Marcus Sanders put very few of his masterpieces on the market. Like his brother, Brian Sanders, Marcus grew up watching his famed grandmother Arzada Sanders work in clay. One would properly say, Marcus learned to make pottery by the most ancient Catawba Indian learning method of osmosis. This ancient process is a slow one that takes many years to complete because of the large number of traditional shapes produced by the Catawba potters. Each form has a distinct building process that must be followed for a vessel to be accepted as Catawba. The swan pot is one of his favorite shapes, but he also makes a wide assortment of traditional Catawba vessels. All of his work is signed and marked with his two-feather motif. On occasion, Marcus makes and paints walking sticks. These are most frequently decorated with the figure of the Black Snake, a serpent that has long been sacred to the Catawba. The fine work Marcus produces has caused him to be noted as a master potter who deserves study. His vessels are extremely popular among his fellow Catawba potters. His work can only become finer as he gains in age and experience.
