American Indian Pottery

Look at that beautiful American Indian pottery

The daughter of Earl and Viola Robbins, Margaret is a rising star among the growing number of young American Indian potters. She began working in clay in the late 1980s and was immediately recognized as a talent. This collector purchased a American Indian Pottery squash/pumpkin pot from Margaret in 1987. This particular form, original with Margaret Robbins, became an immediate hit with American Indian Pottery collectors and maintains its status. Of recent years, she has followed in her father’s footsteps and created some highly innovative American Indian Pottery vessels, such as the “Old Maid Jug”. The idea came from her father and the first piece was made by her mother Viola.  As a result of Margaret's innovative efforts, collectors seek her out for her American Indian Pottery pots made in tribute to her dad. She calls them “Earl Robbins Pots.” As she made American Indian Pottery vessels dedicated to her famous dad, she realized that women receive little credit when Catawba Indian pots are dedicated. She began to make American Indian Pottery pots dedicated to her mom entitled “Viola Robbins Pots.” Margaret Robbins is fully aware that she owes her success to a traditional art form. She makes American Indian Pottery wedding jugs, American Indian Pottery cooking pots, American Indian Pottery snake pots, the American Indian Pottery peace pipe, and a large number of other shapes recognized as Catawba. The Catawba Indian Potters’ website represents a new direction for Margaret. Up to now she has concentrated selling out of her father’s shop and attending a large number of historical fairs.

AMERICAN INDIAN POTTERY

American Indian pottery and American Indian art in general came into its own in the 1960s. Suddenly magazines such as House Beautiful and House and Garden presented mostly southwestern homes decorated with American Indian Pottery and other art objects. The result was that the number of collectors of American Indian Art suddenly grew. American Indians artists were presented with a wide market. American Indian Pottery looked great in a dining room or living room setting. During the 1960s, the Catawba pottery tradition was struggling for survival. It was not until the 1970s that South Carolinians began to see Catawba pottery as fine art. The Columbia Museum of Art led the way when Steve Baker developed an exhibit featuring Catawba Indian pottery. At this time, the potters too began to realize they had something fine to offer and began to sign and date their wares. Prices began to climb. The Indians saw that what they had to offer a collecting public was worthy of the term art. Today Catawba Indian pottery is celebrated, not only in the South but across the country and in foreign lands as well. Most of the active potters proudly point to visitors to the reservation who carried examples of their work to far off places such as Germany and Japan. Today, even in opening the pages of the sophisticated Architectural Digest magazine we are not surprised to find the homes of the wealthy decorated with American Indian pottery, art in the finest sense of the word.
