Catawba Indian Master Potter: Monty "Hawk" Branham
Here is Monty in regalia and in a snow storm, hence the white spots. This Catawba potter took to clay like a duck takes to water. He began making Catawba pottery in 1994 and sold at the Day of the Catawba Festival that year. Since no formal classes were available at the time, Monty sought individual classes from senior master potters such as Nola Campbell, Earl Robbins and Evelyn George. Success came quickly, and his fellow Catawba soon recognized this talented man as a master potter of great skill. Private collectors, galleries and museum shops were eager to obtain examples of his work. He demonstrated Catawba pottery with Nola Campbell at the 1996 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Large crowds turned out to watch these two master potters produce masterpieces in clay. During this same period, Earl Robbins taught him the art of pipe mold making. He quickly excelled in this difficult craft. In 1997 he was awarded with a Smithsonian Fellowship so he could study 19th century Catawba incised designs. Upon his return home, he began to produce incised vessels the old 19th century master would admire. Along with his pottery making, Monty has also taught classes in the making and tuning of the river cane flute. He is much sought after for programs in Catawba music and writes his own compositions.
